What Conversations are

Conversations are location-based community spaces — statewide, city, and neighborhood Conversations with a custom radius. Each Conversation has a member chat, scheduled meetups, and can host one live audio session at a time, where members talk together in real time.

Requires: Joining and chatting need an account on both web and mobile.

Mobile: Open the My Account tab and tap Conversations under Quick Access. On the web, Conversations lives in the Connect area alongside Messages.

Finding and joining a Conversation

  1. Open Conversations. On the web the list has three tabs: For you (recommended based on your location), Joined, and All conversations with a search box — try a city like "Brooklyn". On mobile the tabs are Discover and My Conversations.
  2. Set your location if prompted — your state (and optionally city) determines which Conversations are suggested. On mobile you can tap Use my current location, and quick buttons offer to join your state or city Conversation instantly.
  3. Tap Join conversation (Join on mobile). You can Leave conversation at any time the same way.

Conversation chat is members-only: once you join, you can read the chat, post messages (with @mentions), and see upcoming meetups.

Web: Want a Conversation for your block or neighborhood? Click New radius conversation, give it a name and description, set the city and state, set the center point (or click Use my location), and choose a radius from 100 meters up to 50 km. Click Create conversation. Creating Conversations is web-only.

Invite-only Conversations

Some Conversations are marked Invite-only. You'll see a disabled Join conversation button with "You need an invitation from the host to join this conversation."

Accepting an invitation: open the link in your invitation email. Sign in with the invited account if asked, then click Accept & join and Open Conversation. Invitations expire after 30 days — if yours has expired or been withdrawn, ask the host for a new one.

Inviting people (hosts): if you created the Conversation, you'll see Invite people on its page on the web.

  1. Enter one or more Email addresses, separated by commas.
  2. Optionally set Starts and Ends times, and add a Message.
  3. Click Send invitations. Invitees get an email — with a calendar attachment when you set a start time — and existing members also get an in-app notification.

The same window lets you switch the Conversation between Make invite-only and Make public, copy an invite link, and revoke invitations from the Sent invitations list.

Joining a live audio session

When someone in your Conversation goes live, the page shows a red Live now indicator with speaker and listener counts.

  1. Open the Conversation and tap Join audio. (You must be a member first.)
  2. If no session is running, you can start one yourself with Start audio conversation — you become the host.
  3. In smaller sessions, you join ready to talk, like a group call. If the speaking stage is full (up to 10 speakers), you join as a listener instead — up to 100 people can listen.

Note: If your browser blocks autoplay, tap Tap to hear audio when prompted. In the app, speakers can pick which audio device to use during a session.

Speaking, listening, and stage roles

Everyone in an audio session has one of three roles, and your controls match your role:

  • Listener — you hear the conversation. Tap Raise hand to signal you'd like to speak; it changes to Hand raised so the host can see you.
  • Speaker — you have the mic. Toggle between Speaking and Muted, or tap Listen only to step down to listener when you're done talking.
  • Host — the person who started the session. Hosts have the same mic controls plus End for all, which closes the session for everyone (you'll be asked to confirm), and the stage-management tools covered in the next section.

Hosts and speakers can also invite other Conversation members into the audio session with the invite button — invitees get a notification that drops them straight in.

Hosting a live audio session

Started the session? You run the stage. As host you'll see a Manage stage button (the hand icon) in the header — when listeners raise their hands, a badge on it counts the queue.

Tap it to open the stage manager, organized into three groups:

  • Raised hands — everyone waiting to speak, with an Add to stage button next to each name. Adding someone makes them a speaker and lowers their hand automatically — they get a notification and their mic controls appear right away.
  • On stage — your current speakers. For each one you can Mute their mic (or Allow mic to undo it) and move them back to listener with To audience.
  • In the audience — everyone else. You can bring anyone up with Add to stage, even if they haven't raised a hand.

A few things to know:

  • Muting is a pause, not a kick. A muted speaker's mic switches off and their controls show Muted by host until you allow their mic again. If someone should leave the stage entirely, move them to the audience instead.
  • The stage holds up to 10 speakers. If it's full, move someone to the audience before adding the next person.
  • Everything updates live — promotions, mutes, and moves take effect for everyone in the session immediately, no refresh needed.

Mobile: As host you can also tap any avatar around the table for quick actions on that person — the same add-to-stage, mute, and move-to-audience controls without opening the full manager.

Stage etiquette

Live audio works best when everyone shares the space:

  • Mute when you're not talking — background noise adds up fast.
  • Raise your hand and wait rather than talking over others when you join a bigger session.
  • Step down when you're done — tap Listen only to free a speaker slot for someone else.
  • Keep it kind. Community guidelines apply in audio just like everywhere else.

Sessions automatically end after a couple of hours, or when the last speaker leaves.
