Creating a group on the web
The web walks you through a four-step wizard:
- Basic Information — name your group (up to 50 characters), add an optional description (up to 200), and pick a privacy level: Private (only members can see the group), Invite Only (join by invitation), or Public (anyone can find and join).
- Add Members — search your friends and check off who's in. You need at least one other member.
- Group Settings — set a Member Limit (2 to 500, default 50) and choose permissions like "Require admin approval to join", "Allow members to invite others", "Allow file sharing", and "Show link previews".
- Review & Create — confirm the summary and click Create Group. You're listed as the group's admin.
Creating a group on mobile
Mobile keeps it to one screen:
- In Messages, tap the + button to open New Group.
- Enter a Group name (up to 50 characters) and optional description.
- Search your friends and tap to select — chips show who you've picked.
- Tap Create. The group opens immediately.
Note: Groups created on mobile are private, with default settings. Use the web wizard when you want public groups or custom permissions.
Roles: admin, moderator, member
Every group has three roles:
- Admin — the creator (crown icon). Admins manage settings, add and remove anyone, and assign roles.
- Moderator — can help manage the Conversation and members, with fewer powers than an admin.
- Member — everyone else. Members can chat, and can invite others if the group allows it.
Managing members and group info
- See who's in: open the group's info screen — on mobile, tap the info button in the chat header. It shows the group's name, description, member count, and full member list with roles.
- Add someone: use the add-member option from the members view (permission required). You can't add people who have blocked you or whom you've blocked, and the group can't exceed its member limit.
- Remove someone: admins (and moderators, for regular members) can remove members from the members view on the web.
- Leave: tap Leave group on the info screen. You'll stop receiving messages and can only rejoin if someone invites you back.
Note: If you're the only admin, promote someone else to admin before leaving — the app won't let the last admin walk out.
Chatting in a group
Group chats work like direct messages — text, photos, files, reactions, and replies — with one limit to know: messages max out at 2,000 characters. Unread counts clear when you open the group.
